Traveling With Your New Puppy
For their safety (and yours) we recommend that your puppy be restrained while in the car. There are a few options to accomplish this:
-
For puppies under 4 months old, we reccomend keeping them in a small crate that can easily fit on a seat. Our preference is wire as it still provides them with good airflow. A crate for young puppies will keep them from chewing on something they shouldn't. Also, accidents are possible on long (and sometimes even short) car rides, so the crate will keep it contained.
-
Harnesses with clip on buckle attachements are alwasys a great option. A dog should never tied / buckled by their collar, or with a slip leash.
-
Seat hamocks are a great option for larger dogs. You can easily add your pup’s favorite blanket or bed to them and they keep your dog from falling off the seat.
-
There are a wide variety of cargo crates available. Some are specialized crates specifically built for vehicles which are a great option, however a wire crate or folding mesh crate are also great options. Keep in mind that this breed runs warm so we always recommend choosing something with good airflow.
Some of our favorite things to bring in the car for long trips are:
-
Leash and walking harness with ID tag
-
Blanket / bed
-
Extra blanket - accidents and car sickness happens
-
Bowl for water and water bottles
-
Poop bags.
-
If traveling during your pups meal time, bring food and their food bowl
-
A few toys and chews. Remember, you will be trapped in a small space with them so nothing with anoying squeekers. Also, so chews skink more then others so pick wisely. Yack cheese chews are always our favorite.
While traveling with your unvacinated puppy, avoid areas that are specifily labeld as a dog relief area. Instead, we recommend staying on concrete or asphalt if possible. Choose an area that you think no other pet owner would think “this is a good spot to potty my dog”. Always avoid grass.
Your dog should always be on a leash in public areas.
Avoid using public dog water bowls.
Your dog should never be left unatended in a public area. This is an extreemly popular, expensive breed. If left unattended, someone will steal them. The days of leaving your dog tied to a post while you run into a coffee shop are gone.
